car travel with cats

topic posted Tue, March 15, 2005 - 7:22 AM by  Grl
has anyone done it long distance? I'm planning a 3 day trip when I move to the midwest this summer. I'll have 3, possibly 4, cats. I plan to have them each in their own carrier and to stay in pet friendly hotels along the way. I dread the whining but the ferals will not allow me to sedate them day after day. There motto is "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice,.. well you can't fool me twice," in the words of our Presidente. I'm thinking about putting those two in one big carrier since half the time they comfort each other (they other half they try to kill each other), any suggestions about that? bad idea, good idea?

Wow! You're a brave, brave woman.

When I thought about moving back east, I was going to drive with my cats.

Here are some of the tips I found:

Make sure you update your cats shots and get a health certificate. In some states, you might have to prove that your cats have been vaccinated.

Practice driving the cats around in the car. The more they get used to something and get rewarded, the better they'll be for the long haul, hopefully.

Have collars and tags for each of them

I flew with my cat and had a sedative in my pocket ready to go. My vet at the time told me that sedating him should be the last resort since with cats you never know how they will react. Some get louder and more worked up. I think it's an individual thing. It seems like you know how your cats will react.

    Best of luck.

brave or stupid I don't know. thanks though.

the link didn't work, could you repost?

I have driven the ferals to New England and back, sedated each time. one whined the whole time the other was so silent I worried she died (I worry) the whining one was droolinga little - not a normal thing - so I suspected she was having a reaction. I plan to play music and block it out.

weird how all the info I've seen is fo dogs, dogs are SO much easier to have in the car. They LIKE the car and don't need to be caged...

Shoot, I can't find the link again. Here's another one. www.avma.org/careforanim...raveling.asp

If you go to google and look up travelling with cats, you get a bunch of links.

Our dog happily jumps in the car, truck, sidecar, well anything that moves really. The cats on the other hand, you have to drag them. Once I tried to take my cat to the vet just on his leash, not in his crate. WHAT a HUGE mistake that was. He freaked out and tried to jump out the windows not realizing they were both up. Poor kitty. Never again have I tried that.

That incessant meow in the car kills me. It's funny and cute for the first 30 seconds...

Grl...usually when you give cats pills it makes them drool if the pill has a bad/bitter/yucky taste to it.

I travel quite well...I sleep through entire trips. Butch howls like the wab is taking him to the slaughter house.

yeah that's the sound I dread. zora seems to think theres a big steaming kettle waiting for her at the end of the ride. it's heartbreaking the sound. I might need a little pill myself!

Yes...every cat travels differently. But you should be happy if they don't all pee, poop, and vomit all at once!

On a side note...once I was riding in the front seat of the wab's car, and she had to brake suddenly. My carrier ended up slamming into her gear shifter thing and shifted her car into neutral!

I admit I just bought a big ass ride. very un-pc but guess how much I care? the thought of them all in a sedan was too much to bear. They will be in the back. I like to keep my purse, food and CD's on the passenger seat. (I spend a lot of time on the road solo.)

Here's a tip. Buy some piddle pads...or pee pads. I know you may want to have the kennels all comfy and cozy with towels and the like, but until you are sure what they are going to do on the long term, put pee pads down on the bottom of the carriers instead of towels, it's easier to clean them up and (non-biodegradably-sigh) toss them out then go through a butt-load of towels - stanky towels. I learned this with the usually mellow WS. He's great - unless he's in the car....ug.

Most cats feel more comfortable in a small place when travelling. Like they are hiding. If the carrier is too big - a loose reflective covering may make it darker, like a window cover draped lightly over it. -

Baby wipes - unscented - great for wiping down a stinky cat. assuming your going to stop in a hotel for the night.

A change in Altitude makes my cats scream - going over the grapevine - the big mountian between LA and the central valley with them is always a joy... (yeah!).

However, each cat is different....I'm not looking forward to my 3 cat move north this summer - Mroooooeeeeewwwww....(let's get walkies and share the cries!)

When I moved from the Midwest back to California last November I had both my cats in the cab of a budget rental truck with me, with my car in tow. I went by myself, and it wasn't too bad.

You just have to make concessions for the cats. Remember that the first few hours are the worst and the most stressfull for them. Stop often. I drove for about an hour and a half, stopped for a half an hour, and pet them, chatted with them, and let them know that I was there for them. Then I drove for another 2 hours and did the same thing. After the first stop they chilled out a lot. The youngest one freaked out the entire first day, so I made a little hiding place for him in the cab, behind the passenger seat. This seemed to help.

There is an all natural supplement that pet show owners use called Rescue Remedy. You can get it at your local whole foods store or any place that sells all natural supplements. It is a liquid and can be put in their water.

In the cab I had their litter box in the passenger foot area. Their carrier was strapped into the passenger seat with the door facing me so I could monitor them. After the first half of the day, I left the door off while I drove. My eldest sat in my lap for the next few days, and when I stopped I would put them back in the carrier. By the last day - the whole trip was four days - my youngest was sleeping on the dash board, the eldest in my lap, and they were using the litter box regularly, and eating regularly also.

Every night I stopped at a pet friendly motel, and set up the room before I brought them in. I showed them the litter box first, then the food. You can also buy a spray called Feliway that will comfort them in each new environment. It contains kitty pheremones, so they feel as if they have been there before.

You will have to sacrifice your needs for them throughout the journey, so prepare yourself for that. They will need all your attention and coddling.

If you have any other questions, feel free to send me a message personally. I just made the same journey you are about to make, so I can give you travel info too.

GREAT!!! Thank you. my ladies will probably not be getting out of the carriers since, as I may have mentioned, two are feral and getting them in at all is a major accomplishment. (I'm a bit of a wimp frankly) I can see Gurly being cool with the car after a while though... I will e-mail you thanks!

well, I just took Freddy up to NH from PA. I was able to let him out of the carrier becuase he is such a mellow incurious fella. he did shit in the backseat but, other than that, was cool. A good litttle dry run for the Big Trip this summer.
