Re: hi! i've got a lab
Thu, March 25, 2004 - 8:46 AMI actually thought the shaving thing was extreme too - something that my boyfriend always begged me to do to my lab mix. She sheds like a cheap rug. I took offense to the suggestion as that is not an option for his dog, a dalmation, who sheds like an even cheaper, wal-mart rug. A week ago I had a mobile groomer come out to bathe her. I left my boyfriend in charge while I went about my daily work duties (taking care of other hairy animals) and when I returned I found I was now the proud owner of a SHAVED DOG!! Oooooh I was pissed. But actually, after the initial shock wore off, I noticed that she is not shedding and seems much cooler now. Temperature cooler - definitely not appearance cool. So, maybe it would be worth trying - as long as you can love your dog unconditionally! hahahaha -

Re: hi! i've got a lab
Thu, March 25, 2004 - 11:28 AMmy sister once had a cockapoo she shaved during the summer. the first time she shaved him he wouldn't even look at her he was so embarrassed. the advantage, though, was not finding him with a coat full of burrs. and he was cooler. -

Re: hi! i've got a lab
Sun, April 18, 2004 - 12:07 PMI've got a chow, and I've been told by my breeder, and read from other places, to NOT SHAVE him. I also live in New Orleans, which is very hot for a furry dog (it's too hot for me!).
The thing to do is brush constantly. I brush mine 1-2x/week, and daily during the hot months. It keeps the fur down in the house (and the hairballs in the hallway tell me when I've been too lazy) and gets rid of the undercoat, letting the skin breathe. Apparently the longer outer coat helps keep the heat out.
No matter how furry the dog is, you should be able to lift the coat and see the skin. -

Re: hi! i've got a lab
Tue, April 20, 2004 - 7:11 AMYears ago, I had a Tibetan Spaniel. We have property in the mountains, and we go there every summer. Well, after the first time OshKosh ended up full of burrs, he got a major home trim. I ended up having to do it each time we went up. (Couldn't afford a professional trim.) We called it the "shingle trim", because when I was done, it looked sort of like shingles on the roof of a house. It shortened his hair so it didn't get burrs, but left hair on him, to protect him from the sun. The few burrs he did get, were easily brushed out of the shorter fur. It grew back pretty quick. Usually within a couple weeks of getting home. *sigh* I really miss him. I LOVE my Lab. mix., but I miss my little Tibetan. -

Re: hi! i've got a lab
Tue, April 20, 2004 - 7:17 AMShaving also causes the hair to grow back thicker and fuller. I have a pomeranian (LOTSA hair...), but he never looked like the other poms we saw in pictures. We found out its because they shave the poms a few times and then let it grow out, with the end result of a very fluffy puppy...Needless to say we're glad its not natural... -

Re: hi! i've got a lab
Tue, April 20, 2004 - 8:46 AMwell its kinda like if you shave your legs, the hair is supposed to get thicker and darker...well on dogs it gets thicker and fuller...similar concept though.

Re: hi! i've got a lab
Tue, April 20, 2004 - 7:17 AMOoops. My mom is typing on my account. She's very tired, and forgot to explain that. I never got to meet OshKosh. I'm the only one my mom has right now. Mom says she 'spoils' me. *tilts head* I have no idea what that means. I guess it's another way of saying she loves me. :P
I need to go put mom to bed. She's really sleepy.
